OKLAHOMA CITY – Libertarian party members from across the state met in convention in Oklahoma City over this past weekend.
In addition to addressing party business matters, such as choosing national delegates, members of committees, and presidential electors, state delegates decided on by-laws and platform amendments, as well as approving a resolution in favor of legalizing the sale of organs and tissues for transplant.
Billy Roberts, author of the resolution, was motivated to do so after seeing a friend suffer heart failure, while waiting for a needed transplant. His belief that amending the Anatomical Gift Act to allow for the purchase and sale of organs and tissue would increase their availability for transplant and save the lives of as many as 30 Americans a day was unanimously supported by the convention.
Delegates also heard from 2020 LP vice presidential candidate Spike Cohen. Cohen spoke about the need for Libertarians to communicate the basis of their commitment to individual liberty is respect of the rights of all individuals. They also heard from research scientist and author Dr. Mary Ruwart, whose talk centered on increasing understanding of COVID and how that clarifies the failures of the politically driven response to the pandemic.
With over 22,000 Libertarian-affiliated voters across the state, the party looks forward to continued growth during this presidential election year.
