TAL Attends Vision 2025 Rally
7/31/2003TAL members Angelia O'Dell, Clint Gallatin, Albro Daniel, Roger Bloxham, Lynn Atherton and Jimmy Cook attended the Vision 2025 Rally, organized by the Tulsa County Coalition, on Tuesday, July 29th at Wright Elementary School.
Prior to the rally, it was understood that the Coalition is entirely opposed to the idea of a proposed 1˘ sales tax increase. However, upon attending the event, some members of TAL heard a different message: one indicating that now is not the best time for an increase, but to go ahead with the project once the economy improves.
A former local politician wanted to talk about how it would just take money from the county government and empower the city government. Jimmy Cook was chosen to ask a question. He wanted to know why people couldn't see that this is really an indication of the failure of large government and that looking to the government for solutions would never work. The facilitator gave the floor to someone else when Jimmy tried to say that government solutions never work because government doesn't have anything to offer; it can only take.
While walking around, Jimmy was interviewed by a reporter from KJRH, Channel 2. The segment that was aired on the 10 O'Clock News was the part when he made the comment that he didn't want Boeing and American Airlines to extort money from Tulsa County residents.
Despite the "wait until later" tone of the rally, it was yet another opportunity to acquire ballot access signatures (thanks to Angelia and Albro), find people willing to take ballot access petitions with them (thanks to Lynn), and spread the message of Libertarianism, including Roger's comment that "government is a monster that must not be fed anymore; it must be allowed to starve."
TAL Minutes - June 2003
The June 19th meeting of the Tulsa Area Libertarians was called to order by Chair, Angelia O'Dell. The Chair welcomed the guests and announced that Jason Doll and Lisa Sneden are moving out of state. A going away party will be held for them in conjunction with the state-wide meeting in August.Treasurer, Michael English gave the report which showed a balance of approximately $650.00. He also analyzed the budget for the coming year with suggestions for expenditures and recommendations for how we might handle our income more effectively.
Secretary, Michael Clem read the minutes, which were approved as read. Michael also passed out the newsletter to members present and several people are donating funds to assure its distribution by mail.
Rob Roberts reported on his outreach activities. Although he had a very typical experience, and the incidents were very identifiable to all present, his presentation provided a lot of laughter and was also a reminder to us all to maintain a sense of humor.
Jason Doll reported on the website and he was congratulated for the professionalism and extensive work he has done on this project, furthering the effectiveness of the site as an outreach and educational and research tool. Joy Remington volunteered to accept the position of Webmaster and her offer was accepted by the officers and membership present.
Announcements were made regarding the various events which might be good opportunities for petitioning. An events calendar is kept on the website and anyone is welcome to organize a petition party and collect signatures at an event. There was also a reminder that the state-wide meeting will be held in Tulsa on Saturday, August 9th. This will be an ideal event to bring guests. Plan on bringing a covered dish, beer, pop, snacks, or buns. Meat will be furnished. We are also planning a garage sale for fund raising for next year's convention. Raffle tickets are available for the Harry Browne hour.
Oklahoma State Vice-Chair, Albro Daniel, reported on our being approached by the State Republican Chair with the idea of cross endorsements of candidates when only one candidate is running. The state officers had met with the Republicans and presented to the Republicans a criteria list. Following Albro's explanation of the meeting with the Republicans, the TAL membership present discussed the concept and the inherent problems. The consensus of the group was that it probably could not work. Though we have areas of agreements with the Republicans on tax and economic issues, we hold our positions based upon our non-aggression principle and our efforts to uphold the rights of each individual, even when we disagree with their personal choices. This would make it impossible for us to endorse those people who do not uphold those principles. Roger Bloxham spoke briefly about the difficulties of even working with various groups with whom we have a common cause on a single issue.
As a special note, Roger also heard that David Brinkley, recently deceased, was identified by his partner, Chet Huntley, as a libertarian.
The formal meeting was adjourned and informal discussion followed.
Respectfully submitted,

TAL Minutes - May 2003
Tulsa Area Libertarians held their regular monthly meeting at Ryan's Steakhouse on May 15th at 7:00 P.M. Chair, Angelia O'Dell called the meeting to order and introduced and welcomed guests.Members and guests stood and introduced themselves and told in a sentence or two why they became libertarians. This informal part of the program was humorous and informative. Member and TAL treasurer, Michael English, told about his early disenchantment with taxes, the draft and the military's attitude of "join the military, travel, meet new people… and kill them." He noted that all the other parties actually are totalitarian in nature. Only the libertarians do not want to "pass a law" to solve the various issues that arise.
Michael English, Treasurer, reported a balance of $584.00 less a small payment of $8.36 to Michael Clem for postage, plus a donation to TAL from Billy Roberts. Michael Clem read the minutes, which were approved as corrected. The corrected version can also be accessed on the website as Webmaster, Jason Doll is now including that feature as well as additional links.
Billy Roberts reported on the legal defense situation with Ron Hertzog.
Belinda Silverstar, Green Party Secretary, and Lynn Atherton reported on the status of Ballot Access and emphasized the importance of steadily acquiring signatures. A discussion followed on the desirability of favorable publicity for this effort.. Plans were made to write letters to the editor. Mike Clem promised to work on a feature article dealing with ballot access. Belinda Silverstar commented on the desirability of working together on legislation to lower the requirements.
Anglelia O'Dell gave Clint Gallatin's report on the progress with securing enough funds to have former Libertarian Party Presidential candidate, Harry Browne, as the featured speaker at the 2003 Oklahoma Convention in Tulsa. Angelia said that TAL needs to raise $5000.00 for fees, airfare, hotel, publicity and mailings. The plan is to sell raffle tickets for time with Harry Browne, long respected for his financial expertise.
Angelia O'Dell announced plans for a garage sale for fund raising and a discussion followed on the various dates for fairs, festivals and other events where signatures could be gathered.
Albro Daniel reported on the Owasso City Planning Meeting that he attended. At that meeting, he discussed privatization with the group and later had a Letter to the Editor published in the paper dealing with that subject.
Discussion was held on raising the funds for mailing the newsletter. Lynn Atherton pledged $10.00 per month toward that effort.

TAL Minutes - April 2003
The Tulsa Area Libertarians met at Ryan's Steakhouse at 7:00 P.M. April 17, 2003The meeting was called to order by Angelia O'Dell, Chair.
Vice Chair Rob Roberts, read the Statement of Principles.
Mike Clem, Secretary, read the minutes. Minutes were approved as amended to include the request by Jason Doll, Webmaster, that people contact him with information for the website.
As Treasurer, Mike English was going to be late. He had reported to the Chair that the TAL account balance was $576.22 plus a donation from Billy Roberts.
Old Business:
Harry Browne has been contacted for the 2004 February State Convention. We will need to raise $5000.00 to cover all expenses. This includes his airfare, hotel and speaking fee. To support this effort, he has agreed to hold private consultations for which we can sell raffle tickets. His fee for these one-hour consultations will be $500.00 per hour when normally he charges $1000.00
A report was given on the social held for Bill Stone, South Dakota, Libertarian candidate for Tom Daschle's position. Italian food, music and plenty of good conversation contributed to a very enjoyable evening.
The last item of old business was the necessity of an itemized report showing the repayment of all but about $150.00 to the State for the 2002 Convention hosted by TAL. Convention chair, Angelia O'Dell and Convention Treasurer, Michelle Cook will present a final report to the State.
Also discussed were the outreach pieces prepared by National called "The Viewpoint." The membership present agreed that the "Viewpoints" would be an effective outreach tool and that we should accept them in lieu of our unified membership payments. Albro Daniel agreed to contact our State Chair, Christopher Powell and inform him of our position. We will use the papers as outreach literature at upcoming festivals and fairs.
New Business:
The SEC meeting has been set for May 11th; however it was noted that that is Mother's day, which may be inconvenient. The membership present was agreeable to an alternate date of May 18th if others wanted to change the date.
It was announced that the Italian Festival in McAlester is Memorial Day weekend, May 26th-May27th. The Chair noted that the fairs need to be used for Ballot Access signature gathering. Rob Roberts agreed to get a list of LP inquiries from that area and see if some of those people would help at the booth.
The Chair asked a person to head up a garage sale committee and Misty Roberts agreed to assist.
The Chair also asked volunteers to assist with the Convention planning. Michelle Cook has agreed to be Convention Chair and Clint Gallatin is handling the contacts with Harry Browne. Joy and Mike Remmington agreed to assist.
A short program was presented by Roger Bloxham on the Environmental Protection Agency and its increasingly expanded powers. He had finally obtained the official EPA manual and read excerpts from it to illustrate the contradictory, arbitrary and even tyrannical nature of many statements. Bloxham noted that the EPA has become an extremely detrimental factor in the economy with many smaller businesses unable to meet the stringent and contradictory laws. He also noted that many times federal agencies are involved in programs to stimulate the economy, while the EPA works at cross purposes and their regulation and compliance have a stultifying effect on the economy. All entities are, of course, using taxpayer money. Bloxham covered some of the history of the EPA and explained that the EPA was responsible for a major increase in the use of administrative law rather than judicial law. Licensure, permits and enforceable edits from agencies circumvent the criteria for due process under the law and use administrative judges and courts rather than judicial.

Social with Bill Stone
4/06/2003There was a get-together for Bill Stone (2004 South Dakota Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate, www.wrstone.com) on Saturday, April 5th, at the home of Roger Bloxham and Lynn Atherton. The festivities began at 7:00 PM. It was just a great evening all together -- food, music, and most of all the company and conversation. Not only is Bill Stone a "typical" smart libertarian, he is witty and humorous.
Michelle Cook and Angelia O'Dell planned an Italian Dinner with four different pastas for our pleasure. Jimmy Cook brought Italian wine and Jason Doll and Lisa Sneden brought beer; for those who do not imbibe, there were the usual soft drinks, fruit juice, coffee and tea. Dudlee Linger brought a great dip and Angelia and Michelle also had dips for us. Angelia set the mood early with sparkling wine, Italian type music and candlelight. Jason and Lisa also brought an incredible dessert. Others brought delicious garlic bread, salads and goodies.
The discussions were most certainly the most interesting in all of Tulsa that night and it seemed the later they went the more profound they became, but then that could have been the hour. It was a great party and those who were here had a great time.
TAL Minutes - March 2003
Tulsa Area Libertarians (TAL) met at Ryan's Steakhouse at 7:00 P.M. March 20, 2003The meeting was called to order by Angelia O'Dell, Chair.
Angelia welcomed guests who were present.
The minutes were read by Secretary Michael Clem and approved as read. Copies of the monthly newsletter, of which Mike Clem is editor, were passed out to members present. A copy is attached.
Mike English, Treasurer, reported $576.22 in the treasury. Recent expenditures were for the Post Office Box rent and a check to the State for a refund from the Adams Mark Hotel of $73.00 on the 2002 convention in Tulsa. This payment to the state puts the 2002 Convention, with TAL as the sponsor, at an almost break even status. Final financial status will also be attached.
Mike English also commented that Nick Dunbar at National had explained that all dues must be mailed to National by the member themselves and not routed through local or state affiliates in order to comply with complicated Election and Campaign Reform laws.
Chair, Angelia O'Dell called for a discussion of the on going situation with the Unified Membership Payment (UMP). National has not been able to meet monthly payments to the states of their share of the membership payments. National has offered to exchange the newspaper "Viewpoint" in exchange for the payments for several months until payments are able to be resumed. After discussion, it was the consensus of the members present that we should encourages the State of Oklahoma to accept the "Viewpoint" handout in lieu of payment for the interim period. The newspaper is already printed; the expenses has been incurred by National, it is readable, interesting, colorful, and inexpensive. As TAL is planning to have a presence at several fairs and events, the "Viewpoint" will be an appropriate handout. It was agreed that Angelia should communicate to the State Chair, Christopher Powell, that we want to accept these in exchange for the money owed to Oklahoma and have them for TAL Outreach events.
Jason Doll, Webmaster, reported on the additions to the website. It now has about 40 links to other libertarian sites and he has plans for more additions such as letters to the editor by our members.
Clint Gallatin, Outreach Chair, reported on the efforts to set up various booths at various festivals. He also is working with Harry Browne for the 20004 State Convention. Clint announced the kickoff of the "Personal Time With Harry Browne" raffle ticket sale for a fundraiser to meet convention expenses. Raffle tickets will sell for $2.00 each and the winner will have a personal hour with Harry Browne to discuss financial planning, politics, or whatever they wish to discuss with him. Several tickets were sold.
New Business:
Angelia announced that William Stone, South Dakota Libertarian who is planning to run against Tom Daschle, will be in Tulsa for the Tulsa Gun Show. The problems of securing a booth were discussed as we would have to go on a waiting list. Cost would be $100.00. The motion was made by Mike English that if we could get a booth on Saturday morning at a reduced price for $25.00 we should participate in the gun show. Motion seconded by Rob Roberts. Motion passed. It was agreed that we should entertain Bill Stone regardless of whether we secured a booth at the gun show or not. Lynn Atherton and Roger Bloxham offered their home for a get together.
After a brief break, the program, a debate forum over the War in Iraq, resulted in a lively debate. Rob Roberts presented the points in favor of the United States involvement in the Iraq War, and Mike Clem presented the con. Following the excellent presentation by both debaters, a lively discussion ensued with many interesting arguments presented on both sides.

Reports were as followed: Jason Doll reported on the website and his plans to continue the work that others had started and add more links for greater outreach to those checking on libertarianism.
Billy Roberts reported on the status of the Ron Hertzog case. This is a situation that Billy has investigated and has found no justification for the imprisonment and proceedings against Mr. Hertzog. His wife has raised $3000.00 of the $5000.00 needed and Billy asked for our help in raising the other $2000.00. Several members pledged their support.
Angelia O'Dell suggested that post cards be sent every other month or that a calendar be sent that would cover 3 months as a reminder of meetings. A discussion followed on the possibilities of a monthly newsletter and expanding our e-mail notification list. A motion was made to table the decision until further study.
A motion was made and seconded that TAL yearly dues be raised to $10.00. After discussion, motion carried.
Clint Gallatin reported on the progress made for a speaker for the 2004 convention. He has spoken with Harry Browne, who has agreed to come. The details on his fee will be reported at the next meeting. As it will be expensive, Clint outlined plans for a raffle and other fund raisers to support a speaker of this caliber. Our objective would be at least 300 people at the convention and a large amount of public relations and advertising to build interest for the dinner or luncheon. Clint also received word from National LP that the convention will be May 25th through May 30th, 2004 in Atlanta at the Marriott.
Mike Clem reported on his objectives for the coming year as Secretary. He is planning to put out a TAL Newsletter. He requested article contributions and suggestions for the newsletter. She emphasized the necessity of continuing to work closely together as Mike will soon be called up for military service. She touched on a variety of ideas for reaching and educating, such as bulk mailings to Independents. She noted that most voters and even the legislators are unknowledgeable regarding ballot access. She presented a brief run down of other ideas that would require legislative changes, such as obtaining lower percentage numbers from the legislature, write in vote ability, approval voting, and instant run-off voting. After Ms. Silverstar's presentation an extended question and answer period followed.

11/23/2002Mike Oxley, President of Oxley Petroleum and Chairman of the Energy Advocates (www.energyadvocates.org), presented on the six myths of "Big Oil" at the November 2002 TAL meeting. The six myths are: (1) "Big Oil" gouges the public, (2) "Big Oil" doesn't pay its fair share of taxes, (3) "Big Oil" earns obscene profits, (4) "Big Oil" is a colossal "GIANT" owned by "THEM", (5) "Big Oil" destroys the environment, and (6) Foreign oil is cheap. Following the presentation was a discussion on the reality of the energy industry.
STATE QUESTION LIBERTARIAN ANALYSIS
By Christopher Powell, Vice-Chair of the Oklahoma Libertarian Party.
10/25/2002
SQ 687 : Cockfighting
The general concurrence of society that cockfighting is distasteful does not mean that government ought to be used to prohibit it. This is a classic example of tyranny of the majority against an unpopular minority.
Vote No.
SQ 693 : Economic Development
This would allow local government to issue bonds for economic development and pass special sales taxes to repay the bonds. Also, this would allow for creation of regional economic development districts, which would also have the ability to issue bonds and pass tax increases. Both government economic development and tax hikes are bad news.
Vote No.
SQ 696 : Storm Shelter tax exemption
This would exempt property tax on a storm shelter, if it was built
after Jan. 1, 2002, offers protection from tornados, and the property has
not been transferred to a new owner. First, it isn't the purpose of
government to use the tax code to modify
the behavior of the citizenry. Second, this has so many
restrictions, why bother?
Vote No.
SQ 697 : Undermining tax exemptions
This would allow a vote to be called to overturn a portion of property
tax exemptions on certain businesses, with the revenues going to economic
development. Economic development is more properly called fascism,
but this is particularly
silly. Let's take back some largesse we've already given out so we
can give it out again to some other people. Great.
Vote No.
SQ 698 : Initiative Petition signature requirement
This would raise the number of signatures required for initiative
petitions relating to a few select issues. It undermines the initiative
referendum process. While the goal of protecting the rights of cock-fighters
is noble, the means offered here is worse
than the problem it's meant to solve.
Vote No.
SQ 701 : Tobacco Trust Fund spending
This would allow the possibility of spending a percentage of the Tobacco Trust Fund beyond just earnings of the fund. More money for the politicians to abuse us with.
Vote No.
SQ 702 : Tax abatement
This would allow the Legislature to pass laws to permit abatement of taxes. Allowing for anything to get taxpayers off the hook is a good idea.
Vote Yes.
SQ 703 : Limited liability in contracts with the state
This would allow for limited liability provisions in contracts with the state for persons providing information technology to the state. Contractees would be able to negotiate limited liability for no less than the full amount of the contract.
Vote Yes.
SQ 704 : School District Building Funds usage
This would allow monies from school district building funds to be used to help pay property inspection costs of county assessors. More money for assessors to find reasons to assess higher property values, thus putting more money into the fund.
Vote No.

First Annual TAL Day at the Lake
By Faye Newby8/12/2002
This Saturday Oklahoma Libertarians statewide met at Keystone Lake at the Red Carpet area for a kick-back time of fun and relaxation. This event was the brainchild of Rob Roberts, and proved to be such a success that there was discussion of holding another social event this winter, a Christmas party.
Rob initiated this event as a chance to add to the community activities and political meetings staged by TAL. Building camaraderie among OLP members contributes to our effectiveness as activists, and in cementing relationships makes us a stronger organization.
Angela O'Dell was the prime mover of this event, managing the multitude of details needed to make the day a success. The royal blue Oklahoma Libertarian Party banner hanging from the canopy announced the LP's presence, which is becoming a staple at many community events.
The area Sheriff's Department took an interest in the event too, who observed the LP proceedings from their cruiser while patrolling. One TAL member suggested inviting the law officers over for burgers. Since they expressed interest, this writer thinks that extending to them a personal invitation in the future might hold the potential for recruiting new members, or maybe an interesting discussion.
Roger Bloxham and other OLP luminaries held forth on a variety of topics, and all availed themselves of a scrumptious spread of picnic delectables.
Thanks to all who brought goodies, and special thanks to Angela O'Dell, Rob Roberts, Lynn Atherton, and Michelle and Jimmy Cook for all their work.
TAL Attends Italian Festival in McAlester
By Faye Newby5/26/2002
The Tulsa Area Libertarians, which have been a presence at a number of community activities this year, reached out to many voters at their booth at the Italian Festival at McAlester this month. Amidst spaghetti, spumoni and Polish sausages, TAL officers and members presented the Libertarian philosophy to a steady stream of the curious, the politically disenfranchised, and the simply disillusioned with the current political scene.
Always employing the soft sell approach, Libertarians Mike Clem and others presented the World's Smallest Political Quiz which has been used worldwide to educate voters--and potential voters--as to where they fall on the political spectrum. "The wide range of answers can be staggering," commented Libertarian Jimmy Cook. The Political Quiz breaks down the old dichotomy between "Left" and "Right", and has helped those who are politically homeless discover a political philosophy dating back to the sixth century B.C. The iconoclastic American Libertarian party, formed in 1972, sets itself apart by the fact that Libertarians fall in neither the political left, right, nor center, but espouse a philosophy unto itself.
Braving a flood and a downpour, TAL fielded inquiries, distributed literature, and passed out buttons reading "I Own Me." Libertarian Mike Clem explained the meaning of "I Own Me" to a number of interested visitors by expounding on the impact on society of principles of personal responsibility and self-determination in action.
A diverse group representing many ethnic groups visited the booth, receiving insight on the position of the nation's largest third party, which is widening its influence from think tanks to grassroots political races. Other outreach activities by individual Libertarians have included Clint Gallatin's recent speech to the Mexican Chamber of Commerce in Tulsa which was well received.
Future TAL activities are planned for this year, including an outreach to the McAlester area, and booths at upcoming community events. TAL's next scheduled meeting, to be held Thursday, June 20, will include a discussion of the implications of the FBI's surveillance activities in response to terrorism and impact on the civil liberties of Americans. Fasten your seatbelts for what promises to be an evening of stimulating discussion.
New Meeting Format Announced
5/16/2002A new meeting format was announced May 16th effective beginning at the June TAL meeting. The business meeting will begin at 7:00 and conclude by 7:30. Dinner will begin at 7:30. The featured speaker or special event will begin at 8:00 and conclude by 9:00. The change is being made in an attempt to facilitate growing membership. With this format the members, perspective members and visitors do not have to sit thru a business meeting in order to enjoy the guest speaker or special event. By placing the dinner in between business and the special event people have an option to choose which part of the meeting they attend if they do not have time or the desire for the whole thing.
TAL is making it a point to seek out and schedule interesting speakers from the Tulsa area to help draw more people to the meetings. KRMG's Wes Minter has indicated interest in speaking at an upcoming TAL meeting!
Cartlon Pearson Speaks at April TAL Meeting
4/21/2002By Faye Newby
Continuing his role as a highly visible change agent in both the religious and political arenas, Bishop Carlton D. Pearson addressed the Tulsa Area Libertarians Thursday night. While Bishop Pearson has not decided whether to run for public office again, he affirmed his commitment to "stay visible and vocal," and stated he is "not going to just preach to the choir anymore."
Bishop Pearson's accomplishments in the religious sphere are well known, including his role as the presiding Bishop of over 600 churches and ministries through the Azusa Interdenominational Fellowship of Christian Churches and Ministries, as well as pastorship of Higher Dimensions, a large, integrated church in south Tulsa of over 5000 members. As is widely recognized, Bishop Pearson's influence has extended well beyond the spiritual domain as well, through his involvement with the Bush campaign, his run for political office in Tulsa and as the prime mover behind the community activism of his church.
In his Thursday night address Bishop Pearson also stated that he is starting a political action committee and has developed a consortium of over 500 businesses and faith-based organizations to intervene in current problems in the public school system. While Bishop Pearson was complimentary of the current Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent, Pearson sees a need for active community support of the Tulsa schools.
In addressing the Tulsa Libertarians, Bishop Pearson decried the current leadership vacuum that exists in Tulsa, and commented on the specter of business going elsewhere, essentially "dehydrating" the city. In supporting this view Bishop Pearson referred to the aquarium proposal for Tulsa (now being built in Jenks), construction of Lowes' stores outside Tulsa, and other businesses. Bishop Pearson also commented on the isolation of some congress people from mainstream American life, and told the Libertarians that "you're more in touch with the real issues that face every American citizen," citing the extent to which politics dictates policy, and political corruption on a national level. Bishop Pearson expressed pointed criticisms of both parties, characterizing a handful of Republican party members as "socially inept and insensitive," and the Democratic party as "function[ing] like a modern plantation."
Responding to a question on the decades-long lock that the Democratic party has had on African Americans, Bishop Pearson expressed regret at the belief of many blacks today that to be Black and Republican equates to being a traitor and smacks of compromise. Bishop Pearson referred to his editorial printed in numerous major newspapers across the U.S., entitled "I'm Not a Traitor - Black and Republican." In the editorial Bishop Pearson challenges African Americans to reconsider their political affiliation with the Democratic party.
Thursday night he also questioned the policies that have led to the exclusion of countless young blacks from the economic process through union corruption and misguided and excessive licensure requirements. While Bishop Pearson is an avowed Republican, he commended the willingness of Tulsa Libertarians to “think outside the box,” and question the “basic, traditional policies” that have so pervaded Oklahoma politics.

4/12/2002
The All-American Tax Day Rally will be on April 15th, in Tulsa, at the Downtown Tulsa Post Office (333 W. Fourth), at 6:30PM. This annual event is frequented by Libertarians, conservative Republicans and independent activists and is a non-violent, civilly responsible form of expression. Libertarians use this event to wake up tax payers to that fact that they are entitled to the money they earn and should be free to spend it as they choose not as politicians think best.
Tulsa Today has a full write up on this event.
New TAL Venue, Ryan's Family Steakhouse
4/10/2002TAL Venue Changes... Again - The venue for the next TAL meeting has changed to Ryan's Family Steakhouse at 10934 E. 21st St, Tulsa. The move was decided on April 10th because of a price increase at the Lanna Thai Restaurant underscored by the inadaquacies of their meeting facilities. The meeting time is unchanged. TAL Elects New Leadership
3/27/2002The Tulsa Area Libertarians on March 21st elected Rob Roberts as chairman succeeding long time chairman Albro Daniel who wished to step down after two and half years serving in this capacity. Angelia O'Dell was also elected as vice-chairman succeeding vice-chairman and former candidate for US Congress Neil Mavis.
Roberts goal as TAL Chairman is to advance libertarianism by increasing TAL membership, seeding new Libertarian chapters in surrounding counties and winning local elections. He was a volunteer in the Mavis for US Congress campaign, spoke at the state convention as the TAL Rookie of the Year and is the TAL Webmaster.
O'Dell has long been work horse for TAL volunteering to do everything from making snacks to stuffing envelopes to organizing conventions. She was a key person in making the 2002 Oklahoma Libertarian Party State Convention happen and was also a volunteer in the Mavis for Congress campaign.
The Tulsa Area Libertarians have two offices that will need to be filled at the April 18th business meeting. Angelia Owens is stepping down as Treasurer and Clarke Ruell, Secretary, has moved to Texas. All those interested in being the new TAL Treasurer or Secretary should attend the next TAL business meeting. For more information please e-mail Rob Roberts at rob2d2@softhome.net or call 918-447-1776.
Secretary & Treasurer Vacancies
3/23/2002The Tulsa Area Libertarians are in need of two new officers. TAL Treasurer Angelia Owens and Secretary Clark Ruell are both resigning.
Owens is getting married and wants to spend more time in the kitchen preparing hardy meals for her new husband Michael English. She will be stepping down following the April meeting.
Ruell is moving to Austin, Texas almost immediately and will no longer be able to serve as Secretary. He will be missed.
To seek either of these offices you must only be a TAL member in good standing. Nominations for these offices will be called for in the April meeting. For more information email TAL Chairman Rob Roberts, rob2d2@softhome.net.

September 20th Tulsa Area Libertarians Business Meeting
![]() |
By Rob
Roberts The Tulsa Area Libertarians held their September business meeting featuring guest speakers from the newly formed In Their Name Coalition and the Racial Reconciliation Task Force on September 20th at the Royal Dragon Chinese Restaurant, 7837 E. 51st Street, Tulsa.
Mike McPherson & Wendy founded the In Their Name Coalition the day after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Their goal is to protect the civil liberties and even the physical safety of everyone they can who feels physically threatened because they appear to be of middle-eastern descent. They do not want what happened to Japanese Americans during World War II to happen to middle-eastern Americans in the present day. Already there have been many physical attacks and even more verbal abuse of dark skinned Americans including children, even by other children. Within just a few days Mike and Wendy and gathered over 200 sensible Americans to be on call to act as a non-armed security escort for our fellow Americans who are being singled out for verbal and physical attack by other Americans because of their race. For more information see their 9/16/2001 press release and mission statement.
Hannibal Johnson, Esq., of the Racial Reconciliation Task Force conducted an explorative and productive focus group study about race relations in Tulsa. Hannibal's presentation outlined the interpersonal skills necessary for rational people to communicate effectively and civilly with each other on a topic that can become very emotional very quickly: Respect, Openness, Patience, Enthusiasm and Sensitivity. The presentation wrapped up with a lively focus group study about race relations. The consensus amongst the Tulsa Area Libertarians is that racism is of course wrong, and even immoral, but that it is the personal responsibility of the individual to respect the equal rights of all people regardless of race and that government intrusion into racial issues only worsens the situation.
Neil Mavis stepped down as the Outreach Chairman but not to spend more time with his wife and kids (he doesn't have any) but because he needs to focus more time on his campaign. Neil also stepped down as campaign manager for his own campaign because he needs to spend more time on his campaign. Neil is now accepting resumes for campaign manager so if you're interested please e-mail him. Michael English resigned as the TAL Treasurer because he finally got a job and his soon to be wife Angela was elected to replace him and within minutes rifled the crowd for an undisclosed amount of monetary donations and then left. |

Tulsa Area Libertarians on Meth
By Rob Roberts9/19/2001
The Tulsa Area Libertarians attended the Mayors Summit on Methamphetamine at the Tulsa Civic Center on September 19th. The six hour summit featured many law enforcement types, politicians, prosecutors and social workers who all said that methamphetamine was bad for you so it should be illegal and law enforcement can't stop people from using it but must keep trying.
The panel was asked by the Libertarians why it took a Constitutional amendment to have a war on alcohol (prohibition) but it does not take a Constitutional amendment to have a war on drugs. The panel must have been trying to answer telepathically because no one heard an answer.
The panel was also asked if it was the role of the government, Federal, State or local, to protect people from themselves and again the panel just stared back. Eventually a person in the audience (a high ranking Tulsa Police Officer) answered that the role of the government is to protect people from other people but did not go on to explain how a person is violating the equal rights of another person by using drugs on their own body. It would seem that by their own admission the war on drugs is outside the role of government.
The summit contained some very interesting information as well. Did you know that the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics considers a plastic storage tote "probable cause"? The authorities find that most homes they raid for meth have guns and even more alarmingly some homes also have pornography!
When the war on drugs is won, what victimless crime will they go after next? Unhealthy food? Extreme sports? Masturbation? Why not? What's the difference? They are all bad for you.
September 11 Terrorist Attacks
Statement by Chairman James W. LarkWASHINGTON, DC -- On behalf of the Libertarian Party, I wish to express our profound sorrow and grief for the tragic loss of life and suffering caused by yesterday's terrorist attacks. Our hearts go out to the victims and their grieving families and friends. Nothing we say can ease the devastation and sense of loss they feel -- and that every other American certainly shares -- but we stand with them in mourning the loss of friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, loved ones, and fellow citizens.
The Libertarian Party condemns the vicious and barbaric attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. There is no excuse for such savage acts. No legitimate political or religious ideology can justify the murder of thousands of innocent people. These actions, and the revulsion they cause to all decent people around the world, demonstrate in the starkest way possible that the initiation of force is never an appropriate way to settle political or social differences. The result of such violence is more hatred, more grieving relatives and friends, more tombstones -- and, ultimately, more violence. Libertarians unequivocally reject the initiation of force as a solution to the disagreements between people and between governments.
The Libertarian Party calls for justice to be meted out to the terrorists responsible for the attacks. However, we encourage the United States government to be sure that any response is appropriate and measured. Action should not be taken that will cause innocent people in other countries to be killed because of the actions of terrorists. Such a response would only continue the cycle of violence and revenge.
The Libertarian Party calls on all Libertarians to aid our fellow Americans who have suffered from this horrible tragedy: Donate blood for the victims fighting for their lives in hospitals in New York and Washington, DC. Contribute to the charities that will assist the families and relatives. If you live near where the attacks took place, volunteer to assist in rescue or recovery efforts, as appropriate. And if you know any of the victims' families, offer solace and support in any way you can. Now is a time for all Libertarians to stand together to help those who are suffering.
The Libertarian Party calls on all Americans to act with tolerance and kindness in the days to follow. A natural reaction after such a tragedy is to find a scapegoat -- to blame Arab-Americans, or individuals who practice the Islamic faith, or other people who are in some way different. We must rise above that impulse. If Americans turn down a path of hatred and intolerance, then the terrorists will have won.
That's not the only way terrorists can win. In the past, some have responded to terrorism with proposals to restrict the civil liberties of Americans. We must resist that tendency. The fundamental rights that define the very essence of America should not be destroyed in an effort to deal with terrorism or any other problem. Citizens must remain ever vigilant that terrorists don't win by turning America into the kind of nation where our cherished freedoms are only a fading memory.
Finally, the Libertarian Party hopes these attacks will elicit a thoughtful national discussion about how we can prevent similar tragedies in the future. Of course, there is no way to guarantee that evil will not strike again. However, a foreign policy that limits our intervention in the affairs and quarrels of other nations is a foreign policy that will reduce the chance that terrorists will want to strike at America. Peace and free trade with all nations, and entangling alliances with none, is a time-honored prescription for an America that is at peace with the world, and for a nation that has little to fear from the savage and bloodthirsty actions of terrorists.
Again, our hearts go out to the thousands of Americans who suffered a loss during the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is a tragic day that will live in our memories -- but is also a day that will allow the best of America to shine through by virtue of our response.
Neil Mavis has filed for US Congressional District 1
9/01/2001Libertarian Neil Mavis has filed paper work with Fed Election Commission. for open US Congressional District 1. Due to Oklahoma restrictive Ballot Access Law he is forced to run as an independent. If we want to see him get more than 3% of the vote he will need help. Can you help? Do you have talents in public relations? - You can do PR from anywhere in the state. Do you have talents in fund raising, brochure design, Campaign Management? Can you research issues?

Tulsa Libertarian Party endorses Right to Work
OKLAHOMA CITY – [JULY 26, 2001] The Tulsa Libertarian Party issued a statement this week endorsing the Right to Work campaign for freedom in Oklahoma, announced Edward Howell, communications director. The Tulsa Libertarian Party joins the growing list of organizations that have endorsed Right to Work, which bans labor unions from forcing workers to pay dues to keep their jobs. Oklahomans will vote on Right to Work in a special election to be held Sept. 25.
"This September 25, Oklahomans have a real chance to show they are for freedom and individual choice. The passage of the Right-to-Work referendum will give free will back to workers,”"said Albro Daniel, Tulsa County Libertarian Party chairman.
Daniel also advocates repealing the federal law that requires labor unions to represent non-union workers.
"It is dishonest for labor unions to complain about having to represent non-union workers and at the same time do nothing to change the law that requires them to do so. Therefore, we encourage the repeal of this federal law. Then only true competition for the right to represent workers in disputes within their place of employment will begin. Please join the Tulsa Area Libertarians in passing Right to Work. It will be the first step in restoring employees' rights in the workplace."
Although unions claim Right to Work dissolves unions, about 3 million people belong to labor unions in the 21 Right-to-Work states. Per capita personal income is growing faster in Right-to-Work states than in forced-union states, and manufacturing jobs have increased 150 percent in Right-to-Work states while remaining virtually unchanged in the forced-union states since passage of the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act which made Right to Work a state option."It's not only about promoting economic well being for the state, or incentives for companies to set up operations in Oklahoma, it's about the freedom to choose how you live and work," Daniel said.
