Local Libertarians elect officers, oppose fuel tax hike
Members of the Central Oklahoma Libertarian Party convened Tuesday evening to elect officers as well as to take a position opposing a statewide ballot measure to increase fuel taxes.
A resolution to urge the public to vote no on State Question 723 was passed unanimously. Voters will go to the polls on Sept. 13th to decide the issue, which would increase fuel taxes by about $500 million. Also passed was a resolution to support efforts to have the State Legislature perform an interim study on medical marijuana.
New officers for the organization are Chairman Larry Brittain of Guthrie, Vice-Chairman David Splinter of Oklahoma City, and Secretary Chris Powell of Bethany. Treasurer Paula Brittain was re-elected to another term. The Central Oklahoma LP thanked outgoing Chairman Tom Laurent for his service to the party. Laurent is a founding member of the state LP.
The Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 and currently has about 600 members in public office across the country. Citizens in every state except Oklahoma were able to vote for the party's presidential candidate in 2004. The Oklahoma LP is currently challenging the state's ballot access law, recognized as the most restrictive in the nation, in state court.
